Clubs and Organizations

Based upon established criteria for membership, Central Hinds Academy students may be selected for membership in three honor societies: Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society, and the Science National Honor Society.

Mu Alpha Theta is the High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society dedicated to inspiring interest, strong scholarship, and enjoyment of mathematics. Membership requires that a student be taking Algebra II and maintaining an “A” average, and a member must have taken and maintained an “A” average in two previous mathematics courses.

The National Honor Society seeks “to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in students in secondary schools.” Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have acquired a cumulative 3.7 grade point average in core courses (English, mathematics, science, history) may be considered for membership. In addition grades, leadership, service, and character are included criteria for evaluating potential members, and a prospective member must have completed ten hours of community service. Senior members with all dues current, a 3.7 required GPA, and required community service hours will receive a National Honors Society cord at Senior Class Day and will wear the cord at the graduation ceremony.

The Science National Honor Society encourages students to recognize scientific and intellectual thought. Membership requires that a student have and maintain a 3.0-4.0 overall grade point average and be enrolled in at least advanced or college-level science class (Chemistry II, Physics, Adv. Biology II) during or prior to the eleventh-grade year. In addition, a member must be enrolled in at least a single second-year honors science class (Chemistry II, Physics, Adv. Biology II) during or prior to the twelfth-grade year, a member must maintain a 3.5 overall grade point average in all secondary science courses, and a member must maintain behavior that is acceptable to the guidelines of the school.
